Montessori Instruction at West Ottawa Public Schools

The Montessori method is an instructional approach for children, based upon theories of child development offered by Dr. Maria Montessori. The basic premise of Montessori instruction focuses upon adapting a child’s learning environment to his/her developmental level.

Physical activity is essential in a Montessori classroom in absorbing academic concepts and practical skills. In the primary grades, students are introduced to a host of hands-on learning materials, specifically designed to give students a kinesthetic & visual learning experience.

Students in our Montessori program are challenged to be active, self-directed learners. Each child receives a weekly work plan with a variety of activities designed to meet individual learning needs. The teacher (or in Montessori terms director/directress) guides each student from the outset, inviting the child to take on new and more difficult subject matter when the child is ready in language arts, math, science, social studies, and the cultural realm. The teachers make sure that students meet the necessary grade-level content expectations as specified by the State of Michigan and keep the integrity of a Montessori-style classroom intact.

Location: Waukazoo Elementary School

Our current configuration for Montessori instruction in West Ottawa consists of a kindergarten Montessori (children must be 5 by November 1, 2013)classroom, three lower Montessori classrooms (grades 1-3) and one upper Montessori classroom consisting of students ages 10-12 (grades 4 and 5).

Waukazoo Elementary School has been the home of the program since 2000. Interest in the program has continued to increase over the last few years, as evidenced by the fact that enrollment has grown from 21
students in 2000 to approximately 120 students currently.
