January 26, 2014 – For the second consecutive year, West Ottawa Public Schools has been named an Academic State Champion by Bridge Magazine, which is published by the non-profit organization The Center for Michigan. Only the top ten percent of all Michigan school districts earned the Academic State Champion designation. The rankings also show the following key points for West Ottawa Public Schools:

2013 Academic State Champion Certificate

  • WOPS Ranked #19 out of 540 public/charter school districts
  • Highest ranked school in Ottawa County
  • Best Value-Added education in Ottawa County
  • Highest ranked school in OK Red Athletic Conference
  • 1 of only 6 schools in Ottawa & Kent counties to earn Academic State Champion

Bridge Magazine completed their annual study by “comparing student proficiency on standardized tests at the school district level, across grades, and over time, relative to socioeconomic status.” By using the Achievement Exceeding Predicted Proficiency methodology, Bridge is able to assign every school district a score based on student achievement. The naming of West Ottawa Public Schools as an Academic State Champion for the second consecutive year is just one more piece of evidence supporting the educational excellence occurring in the district. It is also a credit to the teachers, staff, parents and students for their dedication and commitment to the education of every child in the West Ottawa community.
